Netflix’s Newest Original Docu-series “A Secret Love” focuses on a decade-long relationship between two women, Terry Donahue and Pat Henschel. Their relationship started just after World War II and they hid their relationship from most of their family up until a couple of years ago. The docu-series shows what the two experienced, coming together as they did at a time when being gay generally meant hiding in the shadows.
Donahue played baseball in the league featured in the movie “A League of Their Own”. Raised in Canada, she fled to the more sophisticated confines of Chicago, where her and Henschel would start their relationship in private. Henschel said her mother “would have disowned me.”
“A Secret Love” shows the oppressive environment the LGBTQ community faced and how this couple overcame those challenges back then. that life, hanging out on the beach together or dining with friends. It shows both the strength of this couple’s bond, and the fragility and hard choices that often come at the end of a lifetime.“A Secret Love” premieres April 29 on Netflix.
